Yesterday, my parents had to say goodbye to their sweet dog Benjie.

Benjie was such a good guy – he’s one of those dogs who makes people like me, who has no interest in having a dog in the house, change their mind. He came with them a couple of times when they visited us, and he was so sweet, he’d just sit there and watch the cats circle him.

The first time he came with them to visit us, a little beagle showed up, and they were immediately the best of friends, running around, playing together, even (if I recall correctly) curling up to rest together, too.

(The lady two doors down eventually adopted that beagle and named her Sugar.)

He was just a real character – everyone who met him loved him.

He traveled all over the place with my parents, and he was a good little travel companion and the best errand assistant.

He will be very much missed.

You didn’t think that Everett was the only jumpin’ Pepper, did you?

2011-09-27 (11)
First, Everett displays the correct jumping form, while Molly gets into catching position…

2011-09-27 (12)
Then Everett’s all “Remember, VERY IMPORTANT: Jazz Hands!”

2011-09-27 (1)
“No, no, NO! You must BELIEVE that you can flyyyyyyyyyyy! Like THIS!”

2011-09-27 (2)
“LIFT off! Like so!”
“Jazz hands like this? Am I doin’ this right?”

2011-09-27 (3)
“Fly! FLYYYY!”
“This doesn’t feel right. You sure this is a real jazz hand? It feels awkward.”

2011-09-27 (4)
“I am FLYING!”
Sally is awestruck. “Look at his FORM! The pointed TOES! My god, he’s PERFECT!”

2011-09-27 (5)
Everett says “Yes! YES! That is perfect! Beautiful, perfect jazz hands! Pointed toes! You’re a natural!”

2011-09-27 (6)
Harlan begins to lose his perfect form.

2011-09-27 (7)
“Reach for it, Harlan! REACH!”

2011-09-27 (9)
“I… who taught you the Invisible Motorcycle move? That’s far too advanced for your skill levels!”

2011-09-27 (10)
“By god. Jazz hands with his BACK paws! He’s a prodigy!”

Later that day, Everett was walking along, minding his own business, when out of NOWHERE, smacking him RIGHT in the face…

Stupid feather teaser.

Charlie looks like he’s making fun of the size of Patty’s belly.

2011-09-27 (14)
Charlie givin’ me the ‘tude.

2011-09-27 (15)
Laughing at his own joke.

2011-09-27 (16)
More attitude, while Patty’s all “Whuh?”

Judging by the look on Tommy’s face, there’s either a knife-wielding serial killer behind me, or nothing at all.

  1. Saying goodbye to our pets is the worst. I’m so sorry for your folks, Robyn.

Obviously, Benji had a great, happy life and was well-loved.

  2. you both must have bellies that ache from the laughs.. watching those kittens. Sorry to hear about Benji… he seemed like a darling, when you would talk about him and when he visited. There are many loved doggies joining him to cross the Rainbow Bridge.

  3. Sorry your parents lost Benji, I’m sure they will grieve. I dread the day I lose either of my two dogs, I’ve grown very emotionally attached to them. Such great company since I live alone. Always at the door to meet me when I come home. Always eager for their daily walks. I still have two indoor cats too, and they are my companions at night while I watch TV. But dogs crave attention more than cats, and I guess that’s why they make great companions.

  4. Thanks for the memorial to Benjie!! This is our first day of getting up without him, and it is sad for both of us! Always in our hearts!!!

  5. So very sorry about Benji. That’s definitely the worst part of having a greatly loved pet in your life.

  6. I’m so sorry to hear that Benjie passed. It sounds like he was a great member of the family. Pets who love us sure make life better. What a blessing it is to have them, even for a short while.

  7. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Benji. I always loved the pictures of him, he was an adorable dog. I am sure he will be very missed. He was a lucky dog though, it sounds like he had the kind of life most dogs would dream to have.

  8. So sorry about Benji-he was adorable and very sweet to allow cats to surround him and remain calm. They are one of the best parts of living but it’s such torture when they go.

Your action shots are without equal. They are spectacular.

  9. Please tell your parents how sorry I was to hear about Benjie. I know he was loved and that they will miss him so much. He will miss them too.

  10. Losing a pet is one of the hardest things in life. I’m sorry your parents lost their little buddy, Benjie. After my Mom died, my cats gave me the will to go on. It might sound melodramatic, but I don’t know what shape I’d be in right now if it weren’t for my little “bodyguards.”

  11. Aw, so sorry about Benjie. What a good pal he was. He and your parents were lucky to have each other. Please let your parents know we grieve with them over the loss.
The action shots of the Peppers gang are amazing. Must be monkey blood in their family somewhere.

  12. Sounds like Benjie led an awesome life with some great people who loved him completely. My heart breaks for your folks…we all know just how hard it is to lose a special four legged child.

I agree with everyone…LOVE the jazz hands and feet!!

    Tommy’s face is “priceless”!!

  13. What a wonderful memorial to Benjie, Robyn. I’m sure he’d be honored to know how many of us will miss him and his sweet face.

  14. I’m a little sensitive about the pet loss stuff lately. So, I’m reading this post and I’m all, “OH POOR BENJIE!” (sniffle, sob). Then I get to the cat pictures and I switch into hysterical laughing mode “HA HA!JAZZ HANDS!”

You’re really putting me through the ringer here, Robyn.

  15. I’m sorry about the loss of the sweet & COOL Benji. I loved reading about him.

Today’s action series? Fantastic! Have you thought of making a “comic strip” type of book with sets of pictures & comments? Best of “Live Action” Bitchypoo or something less awful. Kidding on the title but serious about the idea. Thoughts?

    Hoyt & PitStop say Hello!

  16. We’ll miss you, Benjiiii ! You know he finally caught that dang squirrel up there in heaven !
