We are still stuck with our strays from November, thanks to a Michigan (US, really) recession that includes rescue groups. We have a gorgeous and friendly long-hair boy that we call EvilPants. Our 2.5 year old twin daughters call him Pants. He is so freaking friendly that I could die for him, but he wants to play with every single cat he sees. It’s a bother, to be honest, even if my husband hadn’t essentially lost his job months ago. I have posted Pants and the other stray (known simply as Girl Cat because I told myself in early November 2008 that I wouldn’t bond and would place them quickly) at least a dozen times on craigslist, buyandsell, etc. No one even asks about them, and I cannot find a no-kill with room for them. I don’t suppose you have any Michigan readers who have room? We have a total of 11 cats, of which at least 4-6 need homes because we cannot afford to feed them and keep up with their vet care. I would rather not feed myself than send them to be euthanized, and so here were are, in a bad situation since January. So, yes, I am not ashamed to beg. Michigan Bitchypoo readers…please let me know if you have room for a cat or two! They are all sweet and wonderful, and I would be happy to supply all of the info I have as well as records and photos!

Milenka –
I am not sure of what part of MI you are from but there are a few excellent no kills in NW Ohio. I formerly volunteered for one (fostering dogs, I am allergic to cats). Maybe you have tried this already, but here is a suggestion. When contacting a shelter in your area and they say they have no room, have you offered to be the foster to the strays that you have? It doesn’t take much to register as a foster, especially if you already have the animals. I have seen this done with dogs quite frequently. The finder would sign up as foster and then bring the dog to adoption events to try to find a home for the animal. They could at least register the cats and list them to try to find them homes, which would be a load off of you. Also, the shelter (at least the 2 I am familiar with) will provide vet care and provide you with food and supplies to take the financial drain off of you. If you are close to NW Ohio or want me to help you check around for other shelters, let me know.

So if anyone in the Michigan area would like to help out, let me know and I’ll forward your email to Milenka!

I made it to Wal-Mart before the hordes descended yesterday morning – in fact, it was pretty dead for Wal-Mart, and I got a parking space right up front. The fact that it was raining could have had something to do with it, I suppose. I got everything on my list, along with a very uncomfortable pair of sneakers, which will be going back the next time I venture that way.

I didn’t do anything noteworthy during the day, except go out and check on the turkeys, who are still babies (Fred said the other day that they probably should be in a brooder, they’re still so young, but they’re pretty happy being able to go outside. AND they’ve already learned that when they see me coming, there’s a better than average chance I’ll toss them some food. They are very fond of tomatoes.) and I was concerned that maybe they don’t know how to get out of the rain. They were huddled under the rain shelter, and I tried putting them back into the coop so they could stay dry, but they were having none of that. So I left them alone, and by the end of the day they seemed none the worse for wear.

I made a casserole for dinner last night – we got our first full-sized eggplant (Fred planted a bunch of Japanese eggplant plants this year, and I do not care for the Japanese eggplants, not because I am anti-Asian, but because the damn things are long and thin and you need 45 of them to get a decent amount of eggplant to do anything with), so I sliced it and oven-fried it. Then I browned some sausage and onion, drained and rinsed the fat off that, mixed it with Ragu, diced zucchini, and chopped cherry tomatoes. I put a layer of oven-fried eggplant, a layer of Ragu/ sausage mix, a second layer of eggplant, a second layer of Ragu/ sausage mix, and then topped it with cheese and slapped it back in the oven ’til the cheese melted. I’ve gotta say – it was pretty damn fine. Especially with a side of oven-roasted yellow squash.

I have sprouted six zits in the last 24 hours, just because. I don’t even think it’s a hormonal thing, I think it’s just a my-goddamn-skin sort of thing. The tube of Neutrogena whatever-the-fuck it is that I picked up at Wal-Mart, that SWEARS it’ll “contain” breakouts in 8 hours is doing nothing for me. Anyone out there have a foolproof way of getting rid of zits superquick? This shit’s for the birds. I AM FORTY-ONE. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE WALKING AROUND LIKE AN OILY TEENAGER.

I am getting low on the anti-aging crap I use on my face, and I came thisclose to buying the Burt’s Bee’s anti-aging regimen, and then I added it up and that shit is FUCKING EXPENSIVE and I’ve used the expensive shit before and I will tell you that I have never ever noticed any difference between that and the Oil of Olay I’ve used in the past. I think maybe I should just slather my face in olive oil and call it good enough.

I bet THAT would really help the zit situation, wouldn’t it?

Last night, Fred colored my hair for me. I didn’t think it necessarily needed it – the gray was starting to show, but only a little – but I got my hair trimmed last week, and I’m trying to not let it go for too long between coloring. This time around I decided to go with L’Oreal Medium Chestnut Brown – fuck if I know what I went with last time. I think it might be a bit reddish, but not too much.

Think I’ll go stare in the mirror at my hair and my 300 zits and make faces at myself.

This little finch adores the finch sock right outside the side door. He drives Sugarbutt NUTS, and at least once a day Sugarbutt tries his very best to catch the finch, launching himself at the door. He hasn’t gotten the finch yet – but there’s always time.

Another week, it’ll be time to get out the hummingbird feeders. I hope the mild weather doesn’t mean they’ll show up later this year. I love those damn hummingbirds, and I can’t wait to subject y’all to tons of pictures of the cute little bastards.

  1. Wow, our Hummingbirds show up in late May and hang around till late September or when it gets cool outside. I love the little bastards too. It is amazing to me how aggressive they are with each other. We have daily bird fights where one is on the feeder and the next dares to show its face and the newcomer gets shown the door.
I moved our Finch feeder since it was with the other feeders and no one seemed interested in it. It is now by itself in a different part of the yard and is suddenly popular. The males are so bright yellow. Of course now the cats want to sit on the kitchen table and yak at the birds on the feeder since it is just outside the kitchen window. Such an exciting life we lead.

  2. I have had adult acne for the past 10 years, and I have tried EVERTHING over the counter as well as prescription. In my experimenting all of these years, I have learned a thing or two. Benzoyl Peroxide 2.5% works well. You don’t want to get th 5 or 10% benzoyl peroxide because it isn’t any more effective than the 2.5% and it dries your skin out more. I have to take antibiotics for my skin as well as use the benzoyl peroxide, but my dermatologist definitely talks highly about it, as it is proven to help regular zits. Also, if you want something to help with anti-aging that isn’t greasy or oily, try Kinerase. It is very expensive, but it lasts a long time, and it does work. You will notice wrinkles being less severe as soon as two weeks into using it. I used to have a deep wrinkle between my eyes, and while it is still there, it is barely even a wrinkle. This is the product that Courtney Cox promotes and you can buy it online at Sephora or Amazon. My dermatologist also sells it, as it is also good to use after dermatological procedures, such as chemical peels, etc. Last but not least, if you do decide to use Kinerase, make sure you also use a sun screen, no less than 30. I use one of the Aveeno moisturizers that contains sun screen (I think they all do now), and it goes on after my Kinerase. Good luck with the zits. I hope it is just the weather causing it.

  3. Robyn,
I use Queen Helene’s Mint Julep Masque. I bought a large tube at the drugstore (cheap) and it has yet to run out. You can do a full face treatment or just spot treat zits. The mask sucks all of the zit juice (?) out and they dry up and go away. Regular toothpaste (it has to be paste not gel) works too, just not as quickly. You can also dab at zits with a bit of raw tomato and the acid helps.
    Hope that helps!

  4. i always had bad acne and NOTHING ever got rid of it! i tried everything from clearasil to clinique with no luck. i was going to try proactiv after my niece had great success with it but i hated to pay that much for something that may not work.

i stumbled upon the acne free system by university medical. it costs around $20 at target and walmart, and you can find coupons all over the place, so it’s less than $20! THIS STUFF WORKS! within 2 weeks, i had clear skin. for. the. first. time. ever. finally, acne free at the age of 44, after 32 years of bad acne.

on the flip side, i have become one of those vain women who obsesses over 1 zit. but better 1 zit than 40!

  5. Japanese eggplant is so yummy! I grew up eating Japanese eggplant because I grew up in a Japanese-American household. My mom usually sliced it diagonally (you get longer pieces that way) and dipped it in some scrambled egg and fried it. I love eating it just with some soy sauce on hot sticky rice! I know it’s not for everyone this way but very delish. There are two kinds of Japanese eggplant…purple and green. The green, in my opinion, is much more tasty. There are other dishes to be made with eggplant that are Asian in nature but unfortunately I’m not as good of a cook as my mom, grandmother or the Japanese ba-chans! “_

  6. To make the zits go away quickly, I was going to say the toothpaste (not gel), too. The plain stuff like regular Crest or Colgate works best. Not the fancy stuff. You are supposed to put a dab on before bed and they should be gone by morning. My children do that and it does work. I bought some cheapy not-quite-so-sticky band-aids for them to put over it while they sleep. I have yet figured out how you are supposed to sleep with it without rubbing it off. I suppose you could do it during the day as well. Good luck!

  7. I’m in my 30’s and I have sensitive skin that breaks out at the mere touch of most products/heat/sweat/anything I’ve had good luck with Clearasil (yay, buying clearasil in my thirties) daily pore cleansing pads – they don’t dry out my skin. I use baby aveeno moisturizer after & so far so good. I have a question… how much money do you think you & Fred save on groceries every month now that you produce so much of your own food? You’ve got quite the little farm going!

  8. There really is nothing better than a Newt in a box. I’ll send appropriate shipping so you can send him right over. Which will bring my total to 5 cats and a puppy.
    Nevermind.

  9. I don’t always read Bitchypoo comments, so perhaps someone else mentioned this. http://www.theanimalsheltersite.com is offering money to shelters this summer which can be obtained by voting. I would like to vote for your no-kill shelter, but need the name and city in order to do so. Maybe you can ask your many readers to vote too.

  10. Zits in the forties. I hear you. Never had them as a teen, go figure. NOT FAIR! Going to try acne free system by university medical. Thanks reader!

  11. I generally don’t care for Burt’s Bees products because I don’t like the way most of them smell and find their stuff a little on the greasy side. But I swear by the Herbal Blemish Stick! It’s a great antiseptic and I also use it on bug bites and other minor injuries and they heal right up.

  12. I will be 50 this October and still break out too. Mine is menpause and hormone related I’m sure. I never had great skin but oily skin does age more slowly. Every moisturizing product I try this time of year (not on oily t-zone) makes the zits worse. Stress and sweating play a role too. The Acne free system sounds interesting. I have used toothpaste and it worked but once I got it in my eye-forget it! I just bought Bare Escentuals Rare Minerals blemish therapy. I have slacked on trying it-my allergies are awful so I’ve been minimalist. When I try it I’ll let you know. I bought the Oil Of Olay tinted regenerist and got a horrible rash. Glad I saved the reciept-it was returnable at Rite Aid. Walmart is not good about taking things like that back. I have very sensitive skin as well and the mineral makeup does not irritate it.
Two hour power outage made me late to read this. I will get in line for the Newt in the box delivery as well.

  13. Robyn, I am turning 40 in November and still suffer from the occasional multiple pimple erruption. I wasted so much money trying to find something that works. Then I read somewhere (no idea where)about using asprin. Crush an asprin (or more than one if you have lots of pimples to deal with) and mix to a paste with water. Apply to each pimple before bed and wash off in the morning. Using this method the redness and swelling is ALWAYS gone the next morning.

  14. Another thing to try on pimples is Vicks Vaporub. You take a wet, hot (as hot as you can stand it) washcloth and use it to dab the Vaporub on your pimple.

You have six pimples, right? I think you should try the Vaporub on a couple pimples, and the aspirin paste on a couple of others, and toothpaste on the last two and let us know the results.

‘Course, if you tell me to drop dead three times, I’ll totally understand!

  15. good luck with the pimple dilemma!

I was going to suggest the toothpaste too but a million people already beat me to it… I think baking soda works too? It dries it out….

Have you started to eat more salt than usual?

I use only sea-salt now because it’s supposed to help prevent them from starting in the first place. I swear by this… I switched to sea-salt about six years ago and rarely have break-outs anymore, unless I get a sunburn. (Have you had one of those lately?)

And, while looking to prove THAT theory, I found this:
    http://www.wikihow.com/Get-Rid-of-Pimples-Naturally-(Sea-Salt-Method)

  16. I use the Bert’s Bees night cream. I bought it in April and I’m only about 1/3 of the way thru it. I don’t use it at night (lazy), but I do use a dab in the a.m. I’ve noticed a subtle change in the wrinkles around my eyes and mouth. It was $18, but if it last 8-9 months, it’s not too expensive. I’m still getting the zits, especially around my period time. I just pop them and move on.

  17. i will second the burt’s bees blemish stick. i am 40 and have tried everything, burt’s bees does a great job.
also, sudden change intensive green tea serum (available at amazon) is not a zit treatment, but if i use it during a breakout it helps clear my skin up almost overnight.

  18. Hey! It’s against the law for you to tell us you colored your hair (possibly) a new color and not show a picture of it! 🙂 I can never remember what color I use from one time to the next. 🙁 And I got nothin’ for the zits but it sounds like you have lots of advice.

  19. I swear by tea-tree oil for the spots. Never fails. If you try it, make sure you only dab it right on the spot, not liberally spread it over your skin as its very drying.

  20. Hi Robyn, I read this entry on my Google reader the other day at work and wanted to comment but the military has your site BLOCKED. So I couldn’t. Anyway, I’ve been using olive oil exclusively as a moisturizer since January, and not only does it not cause me to break out, my skin has never looked more clear, smooth, and glowy. I use all-natural soap from (…can I put the name/link on here? I’ll just leave it out for now)and for exfoliation, I make a scrub with olive oil and sugar (sugar is easier on your skin than salt). I just use regular olive oil in a bottle, nothing expensive or fancy. I was worried my face would look greasy but it soaks in so well, I started using it on my hair instead of using conditioner (just a little tiny bit rubbed through). Basically, I use olive oil for as much as possible, and I don’t have to spend any money on even cheap moisturizers, and I will never ever go back.
