Sights from around Crooked Acres.

Quintessential Crooked Acres.

Jeez. How long have these pictures been sitting on my hard drive? The pigs are way bigger than that now!

You guys have any idea what this is? It smells fantastic.

Happy pups.

Nothin’ angrier than a broody hen.

The eggs under one of the hens hatched, so we moved her to the maternity coop. I carried the chicks in a basket.

“Is this our new home?”
“I guess so, sonny.”

“I suppose this is okay. Plenty of room for me and all the kids…”

“Huh. Ceiling’s a little low. But it’s cozy. It’ll do. My neighbor’s kind of a bitch, though.”

“YOU BETTER KEEP THOSE KIDS QUIET OVER THERE. I KEEP MY KIDS QUIET, YOU DO THE SAME WITH YOURS, YOU HEAR ME?!”

Momma and babies, strolling around the yard.

We have mice around the big coop. Or I guess I should say, we HAD mice. Fred put out humane traps to catch them. Then when the mice were caught, he relocated them to the other side of the back forty. They don’t seem to be making their way back to the coop, oddly enough.

I know they’re awful disease-carrying vermin, but they certainly are cute.

What, if anything, do you guys want to see pictures of? Other than kittens, of course. I’m likely going to make Thursdays “Sights from around Crooked Acres” day here at Bitchypoo, at least for the summer, so tell me what you want to see. I’m not guaranteeing I’ll take a picture of what you want to see, but I’ll certainly consider just about anything within reason.

Sheila drives me crazy and makes me laugh because she is SUCH a little wild thing. I eat at my desk, and she’s always all up in my face, “Whatcha got, huh, can I have some, well, I’ll just TAKE some, you don’t mind do you, I knew you wouldn’t NOM NOM NOM.” I spray the compressed air at her, and she goes flat and her ears go out to either side, but the instant I put the air down she’s all back up in my face again. Yesterday she peered around the can of compressed air at my plate of food, and I almost choked on my lunch because she was so cute. Such a little character, she is.

“Uhmmmm. Hanging off the carrier. Why? What are YOU doing?”

I can’t get over what a gorgeous little guy Lieu is.

Lieu, getting an eyeful of Sheila.

  1. I think it might be mock orange (philadelphus) because it looks right to me and I know that smells gorgeous.

    1. You are right. I had a bush of this outside my bedroom window and loves the fragrance during warm summer nights.

  2. More pics of everything you put up today (dogs, cats and kitties, chickens, pigs, more dogs,) plus garden and bird pics. And I would love to see some pics of the Dog Days flea market. And just whatever entertains you will entertain us!

  3. I’ve recently moved from the city to the country and am interested in learning what to do with fruits/vegetables that are so plentiful in the summer. (Like I recently bought 4 gallons of blackberries – that’s a lot of blackberries!) So…I’d like pictures of how you prepare your fruits/vegetables.

  4. I second the mock orange suggestion for the shrub. That’s what it looks like to me, and they smell fantastic.

  5. I’d like to keep seeing more pics like the ones you posted today. Any and all pictures around Crooked Acres have a mellowing effect on me.

Yeah, those little mice look like the ones at PetSmart to me. Very cute!

  6. More George and Gracie! Although if they are like my dogs in this heat, they don’t really do much that’s camera worthy:)

  7. The flowers look like mock orange, but the way it’s growing over that fence, and the leaves, make me think it’s multiflora rose:

If it has thorns, it’s the rose, which unfortunately is invasive.

This is a closer look at mock orange flowers and leaves:

I’m curious as to how the cats who go out react to the chickens and to the pigs (and George and Gracie too). Have the chickens ever had to prove themselves to the kitties?

  8. garden pics, please! I can’t grow anything to save my life, but I really enjoy looking at the fruits (and vegetables!) of other peoples’ labors.

  9. I would love to see another picture of the cat plate from earlier this week – this time without the muffin. I think I might be capable of recreating it the next time my sister and I go paint pottery.

  10. I would love to see “Sights from around Crooked Acres” on Thursdays. Sometimes I would rather look at your photos than read, it’s so relaxing.

  11. Do your cats check your breath? My cat has a breath inspection every day when I get home from work. She only gets excited if she smells gum though. For some reason she loves to eat minty fresh gum. She will actually dig in my purse looking for it. So strange, these cats.

  12. Some pictures of Seila reacting to the compressed air would be great. Maybe Fred could get some on the weekend when he’s off and you are eating and she pulls her adorable little act? The ears flattened sounds so cute! I would really like to see a current picture of you and Fred too. (I know I have nerve-my only facebook picture is from high school and my flicker account has not photos! Someday I will fix that but not right now!)

  13. I would like a new whole house/garage/garden tour (split over the weeks), plus a refrigerator/cupboards tour like you did once long, long ago…
