Today’s going to be a super-quick post, because we were gone all day yesterday and I have a ton of stuff to get done today. Just some baby kitten pics – my goal is to get in there and get pics of each individual baby’s face when Fred gets home this afternoon. They all look a LOT alike, and if anyone has a tip for simple ways to mark them so I can tell them apart, I’m all ears.

I’m trying not to spend a lot of time in the foster room right now, because Maggie will run over to be petted and loved on rather than tend to her babies, and even though I know they’re feeding just fine, they’re certainly not starving, and for the love of GOD, she doesn’t have to be in there with them 24/7, it still bugs me.

It seems to be a fallacy that newborn baby kittens sleep all the time, because what they actually do is lay in a big pile, everyone sleeps deeply for about a minute and a half, and then the guy on the bottom of the pile is all “Hey! Why am I on the BOTTOM of the pile? I belong on the top!” and starts squirming around, setting off a squirming chain-reaction, and they wiggle and squirm and wiggle some more for an hour, then fall into a deep sleep for another minute and a half.

It’s exhausting to be a wee bebbeh kitten, is what I’m saying.

Okay, here are some baby pics. I’ll have a bunch more tomorrow, I promise!

Those two in the back apparently felt that they were too cool to run with the rest of the litter.

Little white face (note that the toes are a blur because he was wiggling about) wonders how he always ends up on the bottom of the pile.

Tommy and Sugarbutt show those little ones how brothers are SUPPOSED to snuggle.

  1. Yeah!!! Weeeee kittens! They are adorable – looking forward to watching them grow up. Sounds like Maggie did a great job. I’m surprised at how long it took – I would’ve expected the kittens to come out faster. Guess they need time in between to get things organized. 🙂

    1. Yeah, she had to have some time to chew through the umbilical cord, clean the kitten, and – uh – dispose of the placenta. #3 and #4 came so closely together that she didn’t get a chance to get all that done. She must have felt like Lucy in the candy factory. 😀

  2. Paint the toe nails on different feet-right front, left rear, right rear…etc. When you get into large litters you can do the the right rear lateral toe, right rear medial toe…etc. Hope that helps.

  3. You can use coloured permanent marker, I believe… if there’s a whitish part in the front leg armpit (not the back end as Mama washes that end a LOT)so you’ll have a red kitten and a green one and etc etc.

You’ve also got mackerel and classic tabbies in the mix by the looks of it. Mackerels are the ones with lots of stripes close together (like Maggie) and the classic tabbies have wider stripes and should eventually have a ‘cinnamon bun’ swirl on each side.

And ones with more white on their faces, so that should help as well, looks like you have one with a tall white triangle on the nose and one with a more squat white patch. And was there one with white back feet, or am I imagining that?

    1. Most – if not all – of them have white paws, I’m thinking of doing a dab of color on their toes, just ’til I can make the distinction between them. Their faces really do look different enough that I think I’ll be able to tell them apart eventually, I just get worried at the beginning that I won’t be able to. 🙂

      1. It is kind of hard… at least with the Bookworms they were all different tabbies!

  4. Love, love, love the kitties. I could never foster. I would keep them all. There is a city law (Los Angeles) that you can have no more than 3 pets. It might just be no more than 3 dogs, but I don’t know.

  5. Oh, finally! Had to go back and read Saturday’s entry – Fred and Robyn ROCK!!

The kittens are so beautiful. They seem bigger than most newborn kittens I’ve seen…could it be because Maggie held on to them for so long?

Good thing you’re taking so many pics, Robyn. They’re gonna grow up so fast.

  6. I will confess that a kitten will kind of freak me out until it gets over that whole cross-eyed, head-is-WAY-too-big stage. Right about 8-10 weeks is when I think they are absolutely unbearably cute.

But that pile of little newborn kittens…holy crap. Head.Exploded.From.Cuteness.

  7. Photos not showing for me (I’m running winXP & Internet explorer). Your Love & Hisses site is only showing an “account suspended” page. Grr.

Sorry for being a party pooper. Thought you should know.

    1. Thanks Maggie, I’m trying to deal with it now. Things might be slow and/or down until I can register with another web host and get things moved over. I’m going to edit this site and link to the pics directly from Flickr, so check back in a bit, hopefully you’ll be able to see everything.

  8. I can’t wait for the individual shots and weights. A couple look like they are kind of big monsters compared to the others. Maybe it’s just the camera angle.
