Those of you who asked, Fred’s book will also be available via Barnes and Noble in the next few days, in case you have a Nook instead of a Kindle. If you have neither, you can download Kindle for PC from Amazon and read it on your PC, or you can download Kindle for iPod Touch, and if you have a smartphone you can more than likely download the Kindle App for your smartphone. I myself have a Kindle, the Kindle app on my iPod Touch AND the Kindle App on my phone.

(And I still have a bookcase full of real live books and hadn’t touched my Kindle in about two months ’til Fred wanted to see what No Limit looks like on the Kindle, whereupon I had to charge it because it died from heartbreak over being ignored for months on end..)

Anyway, No Limit on the Kindle is here, it’s in the sidebar to the right, and when it’s available on Barnes & Noble, I’ll share that with you, too!

I’m all about the service, y’know.

I got my raised bed veggies planted yesterday, but when Fred went out to till the garden, he reported that it was still way too wet, and he wasn’t going to be able to till it. So I moved the box of seed onions and garlic off the bookcase in the computer room where the smell has been driving me nuts (they smell really really good – I love me some onions and garlic!) and put it in the hall closet. Maybe next weekend I’ll be able to get them planted. I hope so, anyway.

Yesterday was a crappy day where I dropped every damn thing I touched. Twice. I killed off five eggs while trying to scramble two for my breakfast (picked up two, dropped them. Picked up two more, dropped them. Picked up two more, dropped one. GRRRR.) and another couple while trying to crack one open for Alice (she likes egg yolks, but I wouldn’t let her slurp up the ones I dropped, because with the way my day was going, she’d have slurped up an eggshell fragment and choked to death on it).

I meant to do some organizing – the closets in this house desperately need some attention – but in the end, all I could manage for the day was to watch the season premiere of the NYC Housewives, spent a lot of time watching the kittens alternately sleep and squirm around, and lay on my bed and read for a while.

It was the kittens that made me feel better. They always do, even if I don’t touch them (if they’re sleeping soundly, I try not to touch them, because it gets ’em all riled up) and just sit and watch them sleep.

Today’s dumb question regards grill pans. Do they really cook food any differently than cooking it in a flat pan? Because I’m trying to determine whether I want to put my energy into desperately wanting a grill pan or not.

What say ye?

The movies. First, Fergus Simon McMao enjoys a belly rub, oh yes he does.

And second, your daily dose of McMao squirming and wide-eyed amazement.

That girl is always right in the middle of the pack. The better to rule her kingdom from, I suppose.

Last night I took the kittens out of the McMao Cave to weigh them. The heaviest McMao is Declan at 9 1/2 ounces. The lightest is Macushla at 8 3/4 ounces.

When I see what these kittens weigh at 9 days old, it gives a new spin to the fact that when we got Beulah, who was (I believe) 4 or 5 weeks old, she only weighed 8 ounces.

That’s her on the far left there, next to her normal-sized siblings.

Kind of amazing, isn’t it?

And a bonus: my favorite picture of her litter, with Beulah in the middle:

Note to self: when the McMaos are eating solid food, be sure to get a shot like this!

Newt in the cat bed (well, DOG bed really) on my bed. I had forgotten that when the weather gets warm (and it’s been in the 80s recently), Newt likes to spend his days sleeping on my bed, and his nights roaming.

  1. I don’t know about the grill pan. I think it’s more about making attractive marks on your meat than about the cooking capabilities. I could be wrong.

Does anyone know if the Sony E Reader supports either the Kindle or Nook format?

    1. I don’t think the Sony e reader supports the Nook or the Kindle formats. When I first got my Sony, I tried to download a book from amazon, and it was a no go. That was 3 years ago, but I don’t think things have changed that much.

  2. OK SO, not an expert here, but from my experience…grill pans – definitely cook differently. I think it’s the way the heat somehow travels. Keeps moisture in the meat – definitely juicier steaks etc. I love mine.

  3. I *believe* we have one that you’re welcome to try before you invest too much energy in desiring one of your own…I’ll look tonight.

  4. I have both a grill pan and a flat pan (well the kind for pancakes). I prefer the grill pan when cooking any kind of meats. It somehow makes it taste somewhat like you cooked it outside. Plus the fat gets drained off if you have any. And if you marinate anything, the food is not cooking directly in the juices. My grill pan I got from IKEA and was pretty cheap. I’m sure around $12 if not less. It works great and cleans up well!

    1. I agree. (and with Zehava who posted above) I think the meat tastes a little better. I, by the way, have a Jenn-Air cooktop with the built-in grill which cooks everything wonderfully & flavorful … but the clean up time is a whole lot less with a grill pan. So guess which one I use for small meals? LOL Right. Oh, and the grill pan makes nice marks on bread for fancy sandwiches. Cause with me it’s all about the grill marks.

  5. “The princess always sleeps hard.”

Ciara looks like she’s wearing her Easter Bunny ears, courtesy of her brother’s feet! Too cute.

  6. I’m a no on the grill pan–I see no advantage over a cast iron skillet and gave mine away. But, I live where we can cook outside all year, so that’s usually how we grill chicken/steak, etc.

  7. Grill pan-no. Pain to clean which I know by now about you-you will come to hate. Don’t bother.

  8. I had a grill pan which reversed to flat. Thought it would be the greatest. All that smoke setting off the smoke detector put paid to that! Very disappointing.

    1. Smoke? Not good. My stove has a powerful downdraft system (Jenn-Air) so usually smoke is not a problem, but I can see your point if I had a pan that set off the smoke alarm more than once it I doubt I would ever use it.

  9. I remember Beulah! I always loved that tiny little girl. I can’t remember who ended up with her but have you been able to get any updated pictures of her? I would love to see how big she got as a grown cat. I’m loving Maggie’s litter of babies. I’m so smitten with Ciara. She is so sweet and she certainly stands out in that crowd of brothers. I can’t wait until they get to the little butterball stage.

  10. Was the order of Fergus Simon’s name chosen with a nod to the Flying Spaghetti Monster in mind? LOL

  11. Grill pan? Oh yeah. My husband is a Grill Master – awesome cook. I bought him an All Clad non-stick grill pan from Amazon (much cheaper than from say, Williams and Sonoma) and wasn’t sure if he’d like it. He LOVES it! We live in the PNW where it rains a lot in winter, and his grill isn’t under cover. He’s not used that sucker in months – his Go-To pan is his grill pan. Can’t believe he lived all these years without it. Clean up is a breeze. It took some getting used to for him (what temp. was best to sear without burning, while still allowing inside to cook to correct temp/doneness) but now that he has it down? I bet he uses it 5 out of 6 days a week. He yelled in to tell me to be sure and tell you “ALL CLAD, non-stick!”

Best gift he said I ever gave him.

  12. Love my grill pan, too. Quick and easy way to “grill” a piece of meat and quick and easy clean-up too.

  13. Just an idea but with your readership/cat lovin’ people you might want to register favorite cat rescue with these people.. http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/shelterchallenge.faces?siteId=3

I vote daily for a local rescue and they have been awarded $1,000 a month many, many times due to readership and request for daily clicks. Since I love the blog but cannot send money as often as I would like, it is a great way to contribute for free. And easy peasy..

Just a suggestion 🙂 Thinking with your fan base (because you rock) you could help your shelter with an easy $1,000 here and there. With no financial cost to your devoted readers 🙂

  14. Kitteh toeses!!!

    Beulah!!

I am enjoying playing the movies when I get home at night and watching my two (semi-clueless) cats look around for who/what is mewling!!
