10-8 on Sunday nights. Imagine my surprise when we watched the season premiere. We knew that Ernie Hudson – who was the warden in Oz – was in the show, but a familiar face flashed across the screen, and I was struck almost speechless.
“It’s! It’s! It’s!” I sputtered, pointing at the screen.
“What?” Fred said, staring at me and then the screen, which was no longer showing the familiar face.
“It’s! You know! It’s!” I struggled to come up with the name, and finally located it in a hidden corner of my brain. “It’s CYRIL!”
For the record, Fred thinks Scott William Winters is the ugliest man alive, and every time Cyril comes on the screen, Fred says “God. He is SO ugly. His brother definitely got the looks!” (Dean Winters, who plays Cyril’s brother is Scott William Winters’ brother in real life)
I do not think Scott William Winters is ugly. At all.
Also for the record, Scott William Winters played the blond guy in the bar who got his ass handed to him by Matt Damon in
Good Will Hunting. He played himself in
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (in the “I don’t like the sound of them apples, Will. What are we gonna dooo?” scene.)

So, I tend to go through my life (my real life) under the impression that no one really notices me. The main places I go are the pet store, the grocery store, the post office, and occasionally Target. The morning people at the pet store – the managers at least – have come to recognize me, because they need to open the cat room for me on my feed-n-scoop days.
I think that some of the cashiers at the grocery store have come to recognize me, because I’ve been going in there at least twice a week for two or three years. I don’t know them well enough to chat, but we do smile and say hello.
Of course, they smile and say hello to everyone, so maybe they don’t recognize me at all, and I’m delusional. Fred always gets groceries on Saturday morning as soon as the store opens, and so he’s developed a chatty relationship with many of the Saturday morning workers.
But anyway, you get my point. I go through life pretty sure that no one much notices me, because at the places I frequent, they get hundreds of customers every day and why would I stick out?
Saturday morning, Fred went out to run errands. One of his errands was to drop books off at the post office, and since a couple of them were going to Canada, he went in and stood in line because if a package is more than 1 pound (in the envelope, the book weighs 1 pound and 1/10 of an ounce, and they won’t let that slide, because if they let 1/10 of an ounce slide, they should probably let 2/10 of an ounce slide, then 3/10 of an ounce, then perhaps a whole ounce, and all would be anarchy), you have to hand it to a real live person, because it might be a bomb or something.
A flat, book-shaped bomb.
After standing in line for several minutes, Fred got to the front of the line and put his packages down in front of the postal worker. They chit-chatted (because Fred is a chit-chatty motherfucker), and then the postal worker glanced at the return address label on one of the packages!
“Oh!” he exclaimed. “Box 565!”
“Yes,” Fred agreed.
“And3rson!” the postal worker said. “Robyn!”
It should be noted that my name and our last name wasn’t on the package.
Fred, not knowing what to say, nodded.
“She likes to send packages to Topsham, Maine,” he told Fred, as if Fred didn’t know that already. “She grew up in Lisbon Falls. I grew up in Bath!”
Later, telling me the story, Fred gave me a mock-suspicious look.
“And then he told me he likes to have sex with you in the break room every day at 11!” he lied.
“Only on Tuesdays,” I said.

These cat beds are the best investment we’ve ever made, cat-wise.
(Can you tell Spanky just woke up?)

Yay, I’m the first comment poster!
We are total opposites when it comes to feeling noticed in public; I ALWAYS feel like I am being noticed, if not stared at, because I am a female who’s almost 6 feet tall, and I usually have on shoes w/ some sort of heel, so that puts me over the top. I guess it’s just easier to notice someone who’s taller than most people, even guys.
Plus, I’m pretty. 🙂
Just checking the comments, looking for drama.
Nope; no drama here.
Damn. I’ll have to check back later!
Robyn, Your pet store kitty pictures and stories are wonderful! I love kitties and wish I could adopt many more, but we live in a small 1-bedroom apartment so space is limited. I have a question…about 3 weeks ago, we adopted a 2nd kitty. She’s a beautiful torit-point siamese who is fairly mellow. Our other cat is a brown tabby who likes to kick torti-point siamese’s booty. Our first cat Maisey (Or poo poo kitty) will rush Daisy (doodle bug) and back her into a corner until she runs away and hides under the bed. Also, when Daisy is sleeping, Maisey will stalk her and put the smack down on her out of nowhere. Do you know how long it will take them to properly socialize or will we have to referee the kitty WWF forever? Just asking. Thanks!
Robyn-
I always love your kitty pictures.
Where do you get your cat beds? I’m far from you in the great Pacific Northwest, but the only similar cat beds I’ve been able to find are expensive (about $35 each). I’m wondering if you might get them from a chain store like Wal-Mart or something where they are less expensive.
Lisa
I think one of those “book-bombs” is making its way up north to me! I’ll open it carefully in case it explodes. Silly postal workers.
Elizabeth, maybe they think you’re a model! 🙂
Amanda – check back later, we’ll try to work up some drama for you.
Amy – has it gotten better or worse since you first brought Daisy home? I would say that it probably took a good two months (if not more) for the other cats to settle down when we brought a new cat home. And we still have to referee between them sometimes!
(Anyone else with kitty experience, feel free to comment!)
ah yes, the double post. good one. I have a nasty case of Mondayitis today. *sigh*
I grew up in a small town and recently moved back and its almost like I never left. The cashiers in the grocery store are the same one that were there 8 years ago, the drug store employees are the same. Its rather scary. LOL then I get the “wow, I haven’t seen you in a long time”
I wish they wouldn’t notice me! LOL
Lisa, I get them at PetSmart, but I’m sure they’re available at PetCo as well; I don’t remember exactly how much they were, but they definitely weren’t $35 each. I’m fairly certain I’ve seen them at Wal-Mart, too. The cats absolutely LOVE them!
Freaks. Those postal people. Freaks, I tell ya. (I am one at the moment). Robyn, we get lectured daily about the f’n bomb in a package crap. Same lecture, every day. No wonder we are freakin’ nuts.
I liked that Winters guy in Good Will Hunting. Yum!
Have a great evening.
Laura, I just figured you were extra excited. 😉
ZB, I swear, every time I get a package I wasn’t expecting, I stop and think “What if it’s a bomb???”
And Fred – see?? I’m not the only one with the Cyril love!
“the pet store, the grocery store, the post office, and occasionally Target”?
i thought you were the wal-mart queen?!?
Robyn, that kitty Tunder is BEAUTIFUL! I love orange kittys too.
Amy, a few months ago I brought home a new kitty (Sister) to live in my little one bedroom apartment with myself and my 1 1/2 year old kitty Sidney. The first few days were AWFUL as Sidney would NOT leave Sister alone. He was attacking her almost 24 hours a day and she would squeal like he was killing her but she always came back. After about 4 days it got MUCH better. They still fight (play fight) all the time but Sister dishes it out a lot now. My vet said Sidney just had to make sure the new kitty understood who the boss is. Like I said, the first few days were horrible for me cause I thought he was gonna kill her but now they are the very best of friends. She was at the vet overnight getting spayed a few weeks ago and Sidney just moped around and went all over the apartment looking for her.
Lisa, I have seen those beds for as much as $40. I got mine at Big Lots (it’s like an overstock kinda place) for $6 each.
DC, I have forsaken Wal-Mart for Target. The last few times I’ve been to Wal-Mart, I’ve wanted to start shooting people. Target, on the other hand, is all uncluttered and has nice, wide aisles. I do rarely still visit Wal-Mart, but I hate it every time! 🙂
Bonnie – If I think of it next time I go feed the kitties, I’ll bring the other camera with me, so I can make a little movie of Tunder. She has the funniest grouchy-sounding meow!
I hear ya about wanting to shoot people at WalMart; the Super WalMart where I live seems to attract the stupidest people on the earth (so who knows what that says about me) and I am always filled with some sort of rage/frustration/annoyance when I leave there. I’m a poor starving student and that’s the cheapest place for me to get groceries, unfortunately.
Comment on introducing new cats: I moved in w/ my roommate on Feb 1 with my cat Snoopy, and Snoopy and my roomie’s cat Jasper (both girls) have never gotten along. Jasper is a Maine Coon cat (and a bitch) and Snoopy is a scaredy-cat, so my poor kitty is always being dominated. We don’t know what to do to help them get along, either, and figure we’ll just have to let them work it out on their own. Some cats’ personalities just don’t mesh, I think. Especially when one cat is a BITCH. 🙂
I’m just posting because I live in Topsham and believe you me, it’s not often you see that name crop up in someone’s blog. For good reason, really, because we don’t have a Target.
Wendy at pound suggest doing funny googling on people to pull up their websites… based on this comment section, I am sure we could come up with a pretty good one involving: bombs, shooting people at target, postal workers, rage and bitches… hmmm…LOL. There, some drama for ya…
Robyn, Thanks for the suggestions. I think things are a little better now than they were 3 weeks ago. At first we had to leave one of the cats in the bathroom. Now they are both free to roam about the apartment. We did have to separate their litter boxes and dishes into 2 separate rooms though. Maisey still brings the smackdown on Daisy while she sleeps and stalks her if she is walking around the apartment. Apparently there is not much to do as Maisey finds every move Daisy makes fascinating.
LOVE the Kittie pics- what a good soul you are Robyn!! All 3 of my kitties are shelter kitties. Peyton 8 years ago- he was found in a dumpster in a trash bag- Penny- dropped on the side of the road and now Emmett- He was born there (out of wedlock) and I adopted him at 11 mos old! Let me tell you all HELL broke loose when I brought him home. The boys HATE each other. And the funny thing is- the new boy has become the Alpha. The old boy hisses and spits but backs down all the time. The girl just loves everyone and bathes them all the time!
I work in the local bank and I know everyone and everyone knows me- kinda sucks on a Saturday morning at the grocery store when I look like a dirtbag and want to beat my kids!!!! (that was a joke- I only beat my kids in private)
I always thought Cyril was kind of cute even with the ponytail. I haven’t watched that show in ages, though. I’m hooked on Carnivale now.
I am an Oz fan and my husband sometimes watches it too. Once we saw Scott William Winters on a different show, and my husband was all, “Hey, it’s that guy! You know — ZERO!”
Which fits Cyril’s persona pretty well, actually.
Zero! Hahah. Man, I’m surprised they haven’t been using that for a nickname on the show!
