Today, I’m a bit busier than I expected. I promise I’ll put up an entry full o’ Cookie goodness tomorrow (including a few videos!), but for today help a sister out, would you?
Mike and Gus’s new parents are considering switching from scoopable cat litter to the crystals. They asked me about it, but I’ve never actually used crystals instead of scoopable, so I have no good advice for them. This is where you come in: if you use crystals, tell me how it’s working for you. What kind do you use? Were there any issues when you switched from regular litter? Did you try it and have it not work out for you?
And I imagine there’s a process to go from scoopable litter to the crystals so the cats don’t flip out at the sudden change – give me some advice on how you do that, would you?
Thanks in advance, you guys – you’re the best!
I tried it. Too bad the cats wouldn’t.
Both cats, neither of whom had ever had litter box issues, refused to eliminate with the crystals. I gave it two days before I gave in and went back to the scoopable.
(they weren’t that keen on cedar pellets either)
I used it once, it didn’t freak my cats out, they used it but I hated it…. but it was so long ago I can’t remember why… I think it was because it didn’t clump and it looked like someone peed in ice and it seemed dirty right away!
My cats use crystals (Target brand). We did a gradual transition. Mix in crystals with scoopable until you can make the full transition–I realize that is a pain in the butt. I wouldn’t just change it completely overnight.
I agree with Diane. Do a gradual transition. That worked with my cats. I liked the crystals better, because it absorbs the smell better. With crystals there is basically no urine smell at all.
I tried the crystals and my cats didn’t like them at all. I didn’t like them either, but can’t remember why. I’ve tried just about every kind of litter out there any my cats prefer scoopable!
I am a member of the “if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it” league. Why change what works. I use the scoopable (Pro Pet Fresh Results) from WalMart. My 14 (yes 14) cats like and more importantly use it.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROBYN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tried them and didn’t like them. Don’t recall why since it was several years ago. I prefer the Tidy Cats scooping. Holds odors well and isn’t very dusty. Same brand we use for the cats at Petsmart.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!
We use scoopable litter, but mix in crystals (maybe 10%). We like them – the crystals get rid of the urine odor. We’ve run out of crystals a couple of times and could really tell the difference with just the scoopable litter.
Happy Birthday!
Never used crystals, but if she finds that she doesn’t like them, i definitely recommend the Feline Pine pellet litter. We started using that right off the bat when our kitten came home with us, and we had no problems at all. I love the stuff, doesn’t smell like litter at all, easy to clean up, doesn’t really track like litter, just a few pellets that are easy to pick up. We use an open litter pan and unless it’s been over a week since it was changed, I don’t smell the urine at all and the pan is in our living room. Good stuff:) How are you doing with Mikey-Mike? what a pretty kitty he is! And happy birthday!!
that was supposed to say “withOUT” mike! Sorry!
I recommend buying a smaller pack to see how it goes at first… you can always use it under the car if they don’t like it 😉
That being said… my cats are extremely open to changes in litter, I’ve never had any problems in that department at all, luckily!
I have no advice on crystals, but I did want to wish you a happy birthday. I’m not too late I hope… it’s still your birthday on the pacific coast!
