Someone asked a few days ago – or maybe weeks, I don’t remember – why it is that I love my Healthy Back Bag so much. Let me tell you why I love it so much. This is why:
It has so many pockets on the inside and the outside of the bag that I can fit anything I could ever want to fit, in this bag. And it doesn’t seem crowded at all – plus, it’s big enough (bigger than it looks, really) that if I’m running errands I can fit a hardcover book and a liter of water in there with very little struggle. And I never have problems finding anything, because everything has it’s place. The cell phone and my keys go in the outside pocket, the gum and tampons go in the zip pocket with the flap, the sunglasses go in the pocket along the “spine” of the bag, and everything else has a pocket inside the bag where it belongs, except for my wallet, which sits in the middle. Not to mention that the strap is adjustable, and it doesn’t slip down my arm very often. The one I use while I’m at home is a size small, but I also have a size regular for traveling – I can carry my medication, my glasses and a contact case, and several books in it with no trouble at all. If you’re looking for the perfect bag, this might be the one for you. (Then again, it might not. I’m not guaranteeing you’ll love it as much as I do!)

Last night I made a chicken and broccoli with garlic sauce for dinner. It was a new recipe, one I’d never made before, and to say it was a resounding flop would be understating it. I hated it, the spud hated it, and Fred hated it. It was unanimous. So after dinner Fred and I were laying on the bed talking, and he said “Well, you know, I just don’t like thyme all that much.” “You like thyme on your crack,” I pointed out, and immediately snickered. Fred tried to ignore my adolescent humor, but couldn’t withstand the smirking and laughing for long. At the exact same moment, we burst into song. “Thy-y-y-yme is my crack! Yes it is!” we sang. If I were ever to doubt that he’s the perfect match for me (which I don’t), it’s times like that when I realize it anew. We’re such dorks.
We were watching the Jack Bauer Power Hour Monday night, and I noticed that Chloe’s boy toy, Spenser (that’s him on the lower right), looks an awful lot like he could be a Menendez brother. I’m not sure which Menendez brother is which, but I think it’s Erik with the curly hair? (Okay, I went and looked. It’s Erik I’m thinking of) Anyway, I think Spenser looks like he could be related. Chloe better watch her back.

Fred took a bunch of really good pictures of Sugarbutt and Tom Cullen the other night. The ones I like the most are below, but there are a ton more over at Flickr you might want to check out.
“Bob! BOB! BOOOOOOOOOOB! Me and Tommy are getting cozy and we’d like some ‘nip! We know your whole rehab thing fell through, so come bring us a snort, would ya? Bring the good stuff.” Oh, how the brudders love each other. Best. Picture. Ever.

  1. Love the kitty pics.
I’m intrigued by the healthy back bag. Have you seen the leather version in person? Is it soft leather? Just wondering…

  2. hey robyn, do you have the regular size or the small size of the healthy back bag… I HATE my bag, even though its a vera bradley … it hurts my shoulder something awful… I am thinking I would need the the regular size… I need a space for everything and everything in its space because I am in constant brain fog some days…
    thanks

  3. I have a healthy back bag, too! I have size small, the taupe color (which I thought would be a light brown but is actually almost a light army green/khaki). One of the weird things about the bags (and I guess why they call them a healthy back bag. duh) is that you can cram them with stuff, and lift the bag up and it feels HEAVY, but when you put it on your shoulder properly, it feels light. I need to get the larger one for traveling, like you did, because I had to buy a canvas bag for my last trip in order to fit in several books, sketch pads, etc. for the trip. But you’re right, I usually carry a paperback in there, and can sneak in a bottle of pop to movie theaters quite easily.

  4. Not to confuse anyone, it looks like they don’t make the “taupe” color anymore, in the microfiber versions. By the way, the microfiber version cleans up well, I’ve spilled things on it and it wipes right off.

  5. Love your web site. I have never commented before but i had to about the chicken with broccoli and garlic sauce. I made it Sunday and did not care for it either. At all. And it was kind of a pain in the ass to make with the broth and corn starch and all. Thyme tastes like dirt to me.
    keep up the great work.
    love the kitties.

  6. I should look into one of those bags. I lug around a minimum of ten pounds of crap in a backpack everywhere I go, slung over one shoulder the super-unhealthy way in the winter because it’s a nuisance to get it over both shoulders with a winter coat.

  7. Did I miss where you posted the recipe for the chicken with broccoli and garlic sauce? It sounds as though Julia used the same recipe. It sounds good (despite your three thumbs-down at home) and I’d like to at least see how it went together.

  8. Amanda: I think it would, actually!
Pat: I *have* seen the leather bag in person, and if I recall correctly, it was very soft. Very expensive, too! 🙂
Kay: I have a small for everyday use, and the regular for when I travel. The small is big enough to fit a book and a liter of water in it, along with all my usual stuff.
Niki: I can’t! I was thinking that very thing at 3:12 this morning when Sugarbutt woke up by licking my neck. Hee!
Deeje: I haven’t posted the recipe, but I got it from Nicole’s site, in this entry.

  9. Robyn,
It was “me” that asked the question about your Healthy Back bag. They were recommended to me by a physical therapist that I work with. She owns one herself and she loves it. I have been looking to buy one on Ebay but have been waiting to get one at a good price. Thanks for the pics that show the inside and what all you can fit in it. She also recommended the size small bag to use as a purse. Thanks for the good info.

  10. Thanks, Robyn! Well, that sounds… bland. And chewy, what with the brown rice and all. Funny how a perfectly good set of ingredients will sometimes combine into pure evil.
Shuggie is So! Damned! Cute! But I still think that Spot is the most huggable-looking (even if he doesn’t feel that way himself).

  11. Added to Anita’s above caption, ShugB. laughing…
    “Hyuck! hyuck! hyuck!”
I have a leather large HB bag… got it waaay back when they first came out in the Healthy back Store Catalog. It IS soft and yeah, was expensive those many years ago… I agree it’s nice, but I honestly don’t use it much. I carry a lot of crap that doesn’t fit the various pockets, and find it all jumbles in the asymmetrical bottom. I use large Coach “tote” style purses now. The flat bottoms work better for keeping notebook, sketchbook and novel (be it paper or hardback) organized for me.
I will agree nothing feel lighter “on” than the HBBag… I just like my Coach Purses better for fast, organized access.

  12. Hi, Robyn!
Another opinion on the leather HB bag for reader Pat! The leather is soft, and breaks in great, like an old leather jacket.
Mine is 10 years old (!), and I still love it. The leather has discolored in some spots because of my abuse, but other than that, it is still great. If you can afford it, I think it is worth the expense, because they hold up so well.

  13. Thanks Robyn and readers for the lowdown on the leather. I love soft leather and will definitely pick one of these up. You guys are the best!

  14. I have a black healthy back nag – but I don’t use it ‘cuz the nylon/microfiber slides off of my round shoulders too much….
Maybe I should get one in leather?
I did use it as a diaper bag for awhile but preferred my Lands’End one…
