From Karen –
I volunteer with a small rescue group near Raleigh, NC named Alley Cats and Angels. We were recently contacted by another group looking for help with a very bad neglect situation. We took in three kittens and three adults, all in very poor shape. They’ve all been to the vet now, and though at first one vet thought at least one of the adults might be too far gone (she feared the foot wound infection had gone into the bones), we are now hopeful that all will be able to make it with proper care. But we could really use some help with the medical expenses for these cats, so have started a chipin campaign.
Our blog will be updated with ongoing status for these guys as they progress. The initial post about them is here.
Once again, the ChipIn for these poor kittens and cats is here. If you can help out, please do. Always remember that every little bit helps!
Vote for Gracie! It’s the last week of voting. Gracie’s currently solidly in first place, and I’d like to keep her that way. After Friday, the three judges get to decide who wins, so it’s not in the bag for Gracie even if she gets a bazillion votes – but it certainly won’t hurt!
As a side note, I am currently recovering from surgery, so I wrote this entry ahead (wrote it on Tuesday) and scheduled it to post. Who loves ya, baby?
Sights from around Myrtle Beach (from when I was on vacation last week!)
I always try on hats when I’m shopping on vacation. I have no idea why.
Saw this van at Barefoot Landing. I don’t think it runs.
Huge patch of basil (which I only recognized because of the smell). Isn’t it pretty? It was covered in bees.
On Tuesday we went to Charleston so I could see Kiawah Island (where my parents have spent a couple of winters). We stopped at The Boulevard Diner and I had the BEST shrimp po’ boy EVER.
(It wasn’t one of the specials.)
I took a picture of myself in the bathroom because, well, why not?
Then we stopped to see the Angel Oak Tree, which is believed to be about 1500 years old. It’s HUGE.
One of those people is me (picture taken by my Dad). Another of those people is my Mom.
The picture of my Dad taking a picture of me unfortunately came out blurry.
Looks very Morning Glory-ish, no?
I called my father the “PaParazzi” and then laughed and laughed at my hilarity (the grandkids all call him PaPa.)
Any idea what kind of bush this is? We saw a lot of them, and I’m curious.
I love taking pictures of the clouds from the plane window.
Molly may have a bit of a crush on Spanky.
Everett and his white whiskers.
Tommy, hanging out in the basket in the kitchen.

The bush is an oleander. Very common in Houston and Galveston. Can take a lot of abuse and neglect. Conflicting reports that it is poisonous if ingested.
It is definitely poisonous if ingested. It’s common out here in California too and there have been a few tragedies. (Also see the book “White Oleander” by Janet Fitch.)
Molly has very good taste.
you are the.best.photographer.evah!!
gorgeous!
Enjoyed the pictures and hope you had a fun time. Love the VW bus but I have never seen the parking lot at Barefoot Landing empty like that. You must have been out early! Hope you are feeling better each day and recovery will be quick and uneventful. Have a great day!
Robyn, you’re looking good, girl! Green is your color!
I was just thinking exactly the same thing!! Your beauty shines through, you skinny-minny, you!! 🙂
Hey, that rhymes! And I thought I was not a morning person!! LOL!
I agree! That color green looks mahvelous on you. And once I picked myself up off the floor upon seeing you in something that is NOT a t-shirt that is FAR too large, my first thought was “I want!” Where did you get it?
Looking at these pics, I don’t see where you need more surgery. I hope you’re feeling great now that it’s done.
My favorite picture is of the beautiful oak tree!
Too cool to see your pics from my town! The Boulevard Diner is pretty awesome.
Yep, oleander. It lines the medians on the freeways everywhere here in California. Whit, pink, purple blossoms, and is very hardy.
Another CA girl – definitely Oleander. And poisonous. 🙁 But pretty.
Happy to see that someone else already said oleander – I was beginning to question my eyes 🙂
Also, I do that hat thing on vacation too – no clue why – something about wandering around in shops without an actual goal in mind perhaps slows us down to have some fun?
Love the pics of the ocean. I love the ocean, and wish to someday live near enough to a beach to be able to walk to the beach everyday. The horseshoe crab shells were kind of creepy though.
The bush is Oleander. Very popular here in CA as borders to block neighbors and wall and such. It’s a warm weather plant.
Ohhhhh the dreaded Oleander. On a trip from Houston to Galveston my grandmother elbowed me in the side at EVERY.SINGLE.OLEANDER.
Jab, Lookit-that OLEANDER. Jab, Lookit-that oleander. Do you have any idea how many oleanders there are between Houston and Galveston? and she had one outside her house in Central Texas. It’s not like she never saw any before. UGGHHH.
I HATE OLEANDERS.
I can not believe you try on hats. Lice, woman, that is one of the ways that lice spread. another UGH.
Your vacation photos are making me envious. I’m in the pacific NW, where mother nature has finally remembered it’s fall, and thus it’s supposed to be raining. 😛
This may be the cutest bunch of kittens you’ve ever fostered. And that’s saying a LOT.
Hope the surgery went well and does what it’s supposed to this time!
After looking in the “gallery” of the angel oak webpage,YOUR photos are the NICEST ONES!
Great photos!! Looked like a fun time. I loved the oak tree, it looks easy to climb – but that probably is prohibited, it being 1500 years old and all. The surf pictures were good, and the plane pictures of the clouds. Those were my favorites.
That herb may have smelled like basil, but it looks a lot more like thyme; Basil has larger leaves than that appeared to have. Perhaps there was another plant adjacent to it as basil is incredibly fragrant.
You look marvelous, by the way, and it is nice seeing you in clothes that actually fit you. (ahem) And I hope you weren’t tempted to buy either of those hats.
Who wouldn’t love Spanky? He’s the happiest. kitty. EVERRR!
